We're working to make GPs more accessible to disabled people

Our project aims to improve GP services for those with specific communication needs.
Patient and doctor talking

We are currently working with patients, carers, and GP practices to improve communication between doctors and certain groups of patients.

The NHS has created the Accessible Information Standard, which is a set of guidelines for meeting the health information needs of people with certain mental and physical disabilities that make it difficult for them to understand and/or communicate. This includes:

  • people who are neurodiverse, such as autistic people
  • people who have a learning disability
  • people with neurological problems – problems with their nervous system or brain
  • people who have a hearing or sight loss

We are carrying out this work across South West London in collaboration with other local Healthwatch organisations.

By talking to affected people and carers, and then working with GP practices to implement their recommendations, we hope to improve the experience of patients and carers and reduce health inequalities.
