Patient Participation Groups

Healthwatch and Patient Groups

Healthwatch Sutton (HWS) is commissioned by Sutton CCG to support and develop practice based patient groups in Sutton and develop engagement with the overarching borough wide Patient Reference Group where representatives from practices can feed the views of patients into the CCG.

(This is in addition and separate to the role that HWS plays as the champion of health and social care services)

By working to strengthen the patient voice we aim to ensure that there is meaningful engagement with patients, carers and the local community.

To support patient engagement we are running a programme of training and education to ensure patients are knowledgeable, have an understanding of the healthcare structure and their role as a representative so that they are fully able to participate and influence decisions and commissioning priorities. Delegates report “feeling empowered” and “inspired” with ideas on how to take their group forward.

Patient Groups

The NHS Constitution states “no decision about us, without us”

Patients have the right to be involved in the planning, development and delivery of healthcare services. (Consulting with patients allows healthcare providers to improve the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of the services they provide.)

Patient Groups offer us all the opportunity to be ‘active partners’, playing an important part in having our say about the way local services are delivered. They provide patients with opportunities to challenge and influence the quality of services and ensure that what is provided best meets the needs of the patients and the local community.

Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) at GP practices aim to provide a partnership between patients and practice staff, enabling patients to make positive contributions to the continuous improvement of the services provided at that practice. Over 90% of Suttons practices have some form of Patient Participation Group. If you would like more information about joining your practice group, contact the practice, many have information on their websites.

Patient Participation Groups (PPGs)

Our experience of working in the community as a Healthwatch, along with  many of Sutton’s practice patient groups, has strengthened our knowledge and expertise in engaging with local people and identifying areas of good practice ( for example, what works in terms of recruitment and overall communication with the wider practice population.)

As patient groups develop and take ownership of their role we are supporting groups with guidance on governance issues, understanding the role and remit of a patient representative and training in ‘chairing skills/ running effective meetings.

Bespoke support and training is available to all Sutton PPGs. If you would like to speak to someone about how we can help please contact
